Hilary's History
Harold.JPG

I like to think of this website as one which informs and educates. I'm wrong, but that's what I like to think. History is interesting and it can be funny - like the moment when unsuspecting King Harold II was shot in the eye with an arrow at the Battle of Hastings. I bet his men felt a rush of sheer panic and horror when the sharp metal pierced their leader's cornea, symbolically signalling the beginning of the end of the Anglo-Saxon resistance to William's Norman conquerers, however, I bet they couldn't stifle a little titter as he staggered about the battlefield yanking at the shaft protruding from the orifice where his eye used to be. It must have been hilarious*.

At the moment I've divided the topics up between Hilary's Heroes from History and just, generally, Hilary's History. I hope to add to this as I go along.

*Strictly, though the Bayeux Tapestry records this incident, it might not actually have happened. The eye bit. Not the entire Battle of Hastings.

  • Heroes  ( 4 items )

There are many heroes from history. Florence Nightingale, Nelson Mandela, Boudicca, Julius Caesar, Pete Conrad Junior (the third person to walk on the moon) and, of course, Saur, a dog who was King of Norway for three years in the 11th Century.

I plan to bring you my own guides to the great, the good and the not so good characters from world history in these blogs.

I have had it pointed out to me by my wife Anne that my first incumbent is not strictly a hero - "He raped Nuns for God's sake!". I calmly told Anne that the allegation was never proven and was a theory promulgated by his many enemies, however, she still doesn't like the look of him. This is the beauty of history though, one person's hero is another man's villain.
